there are various sources of Indian history let us talk about Archaeological sources.
ARCHAEOLOGY is scientific study of remains of past and those who study it are called as archaeologists. archaeological sources are mainly ruins,monuments and these are also called ARTIFACTS.now the question arises here that what is artifact. an artifact is an object made by humans and which is of historical importance.Archaeology is categorised in three groups as
1.Archaeological sites and archaeological digs
2.inscriptions
3.coins
now let us discuss these three groups in detail
archaeological sites are the areas which determine existence of human as well as their settlement, these sites may be monuments, ruins etc.And archaeological sites help the archaeologists in finding various objects.
INSCRIPTIONS are the permanent writtings engraved on monuments, stones,metal plates,terracotta bla bla.these help the archaeologists to find what happened in past ,how where the things in past.these are mainly in the form of pictographics.the first inscription was found on the seals of Indus Valley Civilization in about 3rd millennium BC,
the study of inscriptions is called Epigraphy.
COINS.the study of historical coins is called numismatics. the study of coins help us to determine the Territorial extent of ruling powers,the legend and figures inscribed on coins help us to understand what the type of administration there was,the material of which the coins were made tell us about the economic conditions at that time.the coins in india for the first time were indroduced during mauryan rule in the 6th century,those coins were made of silver and were punched marked.
DATING OF ARTIFACTS_
when sites are excavated,when objects are found thereafter the process of dating of artifacts starts
C-14 DATING,THERMOS SENSE DATING,ARGON DATING.etc are the techniques to find the date of the object.
the carbon dating is only useful for the objects of 50,000 years old,however thermosence dating is also helpfull.
